Sun Life Global Investments Launches 2019 Sponsorship of FuturFund
Sun Life Global Investments is pleased to be the 2019 title sponsor for FuturFund, an organization that instills financial literacy in high school students and their communities. We recently interviewed FuturFund founders to bring visibility to their purpose and passion.
We asked Sara and Katherine for their elevator pitch. For people who aren’t familiar with the organization, how would they explain it?
FuturFund is a by-youth, for-youth organization that equips high school students with financial literacy skills. We do so through two pillars: awareness and advocacy. Our goal of awareness is to engage young people in the conversation of financial literacy. Our goal for advocacy is to work with key stakeholders in the industry to amplify the youth lens on some more institutionalized financial literacy issues.
Founders Katherine and Sara are both in their fourth year at the Ivey Business School and will be joining the Boston Consulting Group as Management consultants after graduation. Katherine is a big psychology and financial literacy nerd, and has climbed Southeast Asia’s tallest mountain. Sara enjoys writing poetry, travelling & spending time with family and friends. The dynamic duo have been friends since grade school. And that’s where their vision for FuturFund started.
When we were in grade 12, we were getting excited to be finally independent in university. However, we quickly realized we had no idea how to be independent - we didn’t know what budgeting was or how to manage our student loans… and neither did our peers. We realized we discovered a gap in the high school system - financial literacy, a crucial skill for everyone regardless of career interests, is not taught at all. Therefore, we created FuturFund to start the conversation about money management and add a youth lens to the journey to adulthood.
FuturFund has bright initiatives ahead, focusing on areas like women and financial literacy, and advocacy and opportunity for financial literacy among young people. And they have already accomplished a lot in a short period of time.
In 2017, FuturFund hosted a “From Textbook to Chequebook” event in Toronto for 200 high school and university students. This event encouraged students to learn tangible ways in which they could begin to apply good financial practices and skills into their day-to-day lives. 92% of the conference attendees left feeling more confident about their personal finances.
In 2018, FuturFund established the Financial Literacy Youth Network (FLYN), Canada’s first federally recognized network that is focused on youth & financial literacy. FLYN held the first ever roundtable in February, where organizations contributed to a conversation and subsequent whitepaper on some of the issues facing youth and money today.
Sun Life Global Investments is proud to work alongside such a passionate and capable organization that helps young people feel engaged and confident about their financial future.
FuturFund founders firmly believe that industry leaders and advisors themselves can play a huge role in the fate of financial literacy among young people. When we asked how advisors and organizations could do a better job empowering the next generation in financial literacy, here’s what they had to say.
First, advisors who are working with families can invite young people to join the conversation. Making money discussions inviting and relevant can instill foundational concepts to young people that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives.
Second, leaders in organizations, non-profits, and governments need to start inviting young people to the table. Too often, we’ve witnessed leaders having conversations about youth without youth. Only when experienced professionals join forces with young people, can we co-create more relevant and creative solutions. Together, we can make bigger strides towards equipping Canada’s next generation with financial literacy.
There you have it. Together, we can make bigger strides towards equipping Canada’s next generation with financial literacy. That’s what this sponsorship is about. And hey, we can all play a part. Who in your immediate sphere of influence might you be able to mentor financially, or give a little direction to?
Together we can make a difference.
